Flag Day & Army Birthday…

Flag Day

It looks like 3/4 of the blogosphere forgot that yesterday, June 14th, was Flag Day and the 228th birthday of the Army. I spent almost a half hour at Technorati, trying to find blogs to link to, and only found a handful of EARNEST posts about the day. What a shame. No wonder our country is in it’s current state. People just don’t care anymore. It’s “in” to desecrate the flag these days…to tear it…to burn it…to urinate on it. All because people don’t agree with the war or because they hate Bush. NOT very good reasons people. If you TRULY love this country, despite what you think of it’s current administration, then you should have more respect for the flag. If you TRULY want to make this country a better place, then you should be PISSED when idiots burn it. Why don’t we see more flags flying on porches and on cars? Will it take another terrorist attack for people to care again???

God, this really makes me sad. It makes me wonder where in the world America is going to be in 10 years. I almost don’t want to think about it. It makes me scared for my son. The America I’m living in now is NOT the America that I grew up in. The America I want my son to experience.

Well, let’s make up for it, shall we? I challenge you all to post about Flag Day and what it means to you. If you DID post about Flag Day, do me a favor and trackback to this post and show the rest of the blogosphere that you didn’t forget. :)

It’s important that we remember Old Glory and what she stands for. It’s important for us to pass this on to future generations.

Proper Display of the American Flag:

The flag is normally flown from sunrise to sunset.

In the morning, raise the flag briskly. At sunset, lower it slowly.

Always, raise and lower it ceremoniously.

The flag should not be flown at night without a light on it.

The flag should not be flown in the rain or inclement weather.

After a tragedy or death, the flag is flown at half staff for 30 days. It’s called “half staff” on land, and “half mast” on a ship.

When flown vertically on a pole, the stars and blue field ,or “union”,
is at the top and at the end of the pole (away from your house).

The American flag is always flown at the top of the pole. Your state flag and other flags fly below it.

The union is always on top. When displayed in print, the stars and blue field are always on the left.

Never let your flag touch the ground, never…period.

Fold your flag when storing. Don’t just stuff it in a drawer or box.

When your flag is old and has seen better days,it is time to retire it. Old flags should be burned or buried. Please do not throw it in the trash.

By Executive Order, the flag flies 24 hours a day at the following locations:

The Betsy Ross House, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

The White House, Washington, D.C.

U.S. Capitol, Washington, D.C.

Washington Monument, Washington, D.C.

Iwo Jima Memorial to U.S. Marines, Arlington, Virginia

Battleground in Lexington, MA (site of first shots in the Revolutionary War)

Winter encampment cabins, Valley Forge, Pennsylvania

Fort McHenry, Baltimore, Maryland (a flag flying over Fort McHenry after a battle during the War of 1812 provided the inspiration for “The Star-Spangled Banner.”)

The Star-Spangled Banner Flag House, Baltimore, Maryland (site where the famed flag over Fort McHenry was sewn)

Jenny Wade House in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania (Jenny Wade was the only civilian killed at the battle of Gettysburg)

U.S.S. Arizona Memorial, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii

All custom points and points of entry into the United States

Naturally, though while not under Executive Order, a flag flies 24 hours a day on the surface of the moon.

I didn’t forget, I just didn’t blog it. Probably shoulda. We did get a new flag up for the season. Oh, by the way, I drifted to your through Grey Biker. I’ve been fiddling with my blog lately, trying to find my passion. Early me was opinions and rants on current events. Current me is basic biker news, just keeping the site going, dedicating it to our riding group. I’ll stop by again if you don’t mind. Maybe I’ll trackback to your Flag Day observations later when I get home. Thanks for the cup of coffee.

Kudos to you for remembering. Me I never forget the date as it was my nanny’s birthday. However since she has passed I don’t pride myself in the day as in the past but then as we found out the sex of our baby yesterday it made the date a bit brighter for me!

The problem was that most of the calendar makers forgot as well…only one of the three that I have had it on there…and it was the one I use for keeping up with schoolwork, not my work one or my wall calendar at home.

I realized it too late…and studying for my test won out over booting up the computer and logging online to post an entry about it…

Great post, Gennie! And what a cool list of places Old Glory gets to wave unimpeded. I’d never seen those and it was just fascinating. Thanks for doing the legwork.

OUCH! I hang my head in shame! All I put up was a lousy cartoon and no other mention! I am ashamed…I will now go FLOG myself with a wet noodle once for each star and stripe on the flag!

No, I didn’t make a post:( But you can betchurass that I didn’t forget:) I have an extra special 4′ x 6′ flag that I flew yesterday instead of the regular one we put up and take down daily. And get this: I was taught flag etiquette in SCHOOL! In the 3rd grade! Do they do that around here?

I really should consult you on what I should blog about. Since you ARE the Blogging Maven;^)

Great post! It’s nice to see that some folks still remember old glory. Thanks for including my blog as one of the few that remembered.

I blogged it too, but Technorati hates me. Nice post.
